Community Building at NISC
Schools are an exciting place to be, especially at the start of the year. Students, staff, and parents return rested, rejuvenated, and excited about the prospects of the coming school year. We join together to form one community of learners, the NISC Community, who will support each other through the coming months. We will celebrate our successes, learn from our disappointments, and face our challenges as a community. The NISC Community is central to what we do as a school. As we start the new school year, we are introducing some changes to build a stronger community at NISC, empowering students to be active members and develop their leadership capacities. Middle and high school students will have a 25 minute “Community” time each morning, between first and second blocks. During this time, all upper school teachers will be available for extra support, mentoring, and guidance. Students who are struggling may be required to come in for extra help, while other students may choose to see a teacher for some extra help. There will also be Community meetings, where staff and students will share important information, plan service learning activities, or address pertinent issues. It will also be a time for individual counseling, college and career advising, and personal interactions with NISC faculty. Students who are achieving high grades and do not need the extra support may use this time as a break, to have a snack, talk with friends, go to the media center, or just hang out before their next class.
The goal of community building is to provide all students with a network of people to support and guide them through their NISC career. A strong learning community embodies the motto that we have adopted for this year, “Every child, everyday.” We want every NISC student to have the support they need, everyday.
