Information and Communication Technology (ICT) at NISC
ICT is a powerful and driving force for educational change. In
education, the profound impact of keeping pace with ICT development is
being deeply felt. NISC's ICT curriculum reflects our belief that
providing technological competence for our students is essential.Computer interfacing is integral to our school-wide educational
programs, and computer competency is a necessity for all students.
Computers enhance all learning and have become a tool for students to
use when solving problems, searching for information and making
presentations. Therefore, one of our goals is to integrate computers
effectively into all areas of our school.
NISC students are exposed to
the best and most widely used hardware technologies, operating systems
and software applications available. Students have access to the
latest internet compatible computers, scanners, digital imaging
equipment and relevant software. To accomplish NISC's ICT objectives,
the school employs a full-time Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer
and trained support staff to manage and maintain an Enterprise Level
school-wide network supporting Microsoft Windows XP, Vista and Office
2007 software as well as many other popular applications such as Adobe
Photoshop. School-wide communication and collaboration is handled
through our Exchange Server, and the popular Follett Destiny library
software allows members access to the school’s extensive library
database from anywhere on campus. NISC provides free, campus wide
wireless access for staff and student use, supporting Windows, Mac and
Linux laptops. Instruction in computer functions and usage comes
through formalized computer lab experiences, as well as through
practical hands-on experiences both in students' regular classrooms
and in specialist areas. As well as three fully equipped computer labs
and a library mini-lab, computers are available in all regular
classrooms and accessible to all specialist classes for students to
expand their technological savvy. At our most advanced level, NISC
teaches the Advanced Placement (AP) Computer Science Course, allowing
Grades 11 and 12 students to receive college level instruction. Check
back here regularly for news and updates regard NISC and technology.
