EAL at NISC

Many students at NISC have English as an Additional Language (EAL, formerly called ESL).
As an International School, NISC values the rich diversity that different languages and cultures bring to an educational community and supports students in their English language learning so they can access a full international curriculum.
Many EAL students are proficient in English and successfully operate in the mainstream classes. Others need varying degrees of English language support depending on a range of factors that are considered at admission.

EAL program
The EAL program at NISC is designed to offer different levels of support for students from Grade 2- 9. EAL instruction is provided by qualified, experienced EAL teachers who work with students in small ‘pull-out’ groups and in their class room. They focus on developing the social and communication skills necessary to participate in classroom activities and building the grammatical structures of the English language for academic progress and success.

The EAL teachers collaborate and work closely with the classroom teachers to provide appropriate support for the relevant curriculum. In the Elementary school, EAL learning plans are developed to support the PYP Units of Inquiry and the teachers work together in the classroom to support EAL students.
In the Middle and Upper Schools, EAL teachers and classroom teachers collaborate to support EAL students to gain the necessary skills for success, and to provide appropriate materials for the particular subject.
Your EAL student will be given a warm welcome at NISC. Our current EAL students actively participate in all aspects of school life and quickly gain confidence in their social English while being supported in the development of the language skills necessary to access our International school curriculum.
