The English as a Second Language (ESL) program at NISC is designed
to meet the basic language needs of students enrolled, whose English
language skills must be improved in order for them to see increased success in
the core classes. Emphasis is placed on helping ESL students function productively
and successfully at grade/age level within the school's regular academic program.
ESL students must demonstrate the ability to function at grade level in a language
other than English - i.e. his or her native language.
Formal ESL instruction at NISC generally begins for selected students in
grade 2 and continues as needed through grade 8. Students requiring
intensive ESL instruction are not enrolled above grade 7, but may still
be eligible for enrollment into the ESL Bridge Program.
